acorn cap nuts

What Are Acorn Cap Nuts

Acorn cap nuts have a domed head giving a finished appearance and covering exposed threads providing not only a clean look but also a level of protection.

  • Since acorn nuts have a closed end, the mating fasteners exposed threads must be short enough to allow the nut to be fully tightened.
  • The hex portion under the cap allows for installation with sockets wrenches and nuts drivers.
  • The domed portion is internally threaded and protects the external threads of the mating fastener.
  • Cap nuts can be used with screws and bolts or any other externally threaded items that have a machined thread.

coupling nuts

What is a Coupling Nut

Coupling nuts are very similar to hex nuts but are much longer giving it the ability to join two externally threaded fasteners and create an extension.

Using Coupling Nuts

  • Coupling nuts are used mainly for connecting threaded rods and pipes.
  • Applications included leveling, extending, or spacing threaded rods and studs.
  • In applications where it is critical that the threaded component engages half of the nuts thickness, a hole can be drilled on one side in the center of the nut to create a sight hole for visual inspection.

2d flange nuts

What is a Flange Nut and how are they used

Flange nuts have a wide flange under the hex that acts as a washer which helps to evenly distribute pressure over the parts being secured.

  • Flange nuts work extremely well for oversized or irregularly shaped holes since the flange will cover any discrepancies on the mating surface.
  • Serrated flange nuts have serrations on the flange are positioned at an angle that bites into the material being fastened against to provent the nut from turning loose.
  • Serrated lock nuts provides better vibration resistance than a standard hex nut.
  • The serrations on the flange will scratch or mar a surface so if using on a painted or coated surface and moisture could be an issue, it is best to choose a fastener that will not run the risk of removing the coating and exposing the mating surface to the possibility of corrosion.

2d hex nuts

What is a Hex Nut and how are they used

A finished hex nut is a classic design which is widely used for industrial as well as commercial use. Hex nuts are required for most fastening purpose.

  • Hex nuts are designed for hassle free installation. Though the hex nut design seems basic they are created to deliver high end efficiency and performance.
  • Hex nuts are perhaps the most commonly used nut in the world today found in structural machinery and automotive applications.
  • Coupled with bolts to create a tight secure joint providing adequate strength for many different types of common applications..
  • Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple parts together by a combination of their threads friction with slight elastic deformation which is a slight stretching of the bolt and compression of the joined parts.

2d jam nuts

What is a Jam Nut and how are they used

A Jam nut is a low profile nut designed to be tightened against the mating material and then having a finished or heavy hex nut tightened against the jam nut to keep it from loosening.

  • When fastening soft or brittle materials it is suggested to use a jam and hex nut assembly to keep the materials in place without damaging them from pressure.
  • Jam nuts are also used in applications where a component is needed to move freely on the bolt of stud.
  • In areas where space is limited, a jam nut can be used instead of a standard hex nut but is recommended to use thread locker if vibration is a concern.
  • A double nut assembly can also be used if there is concern of stripping the threads of the bolt or stud.

2d nylon lock nuts

What is a Nylon Lock Nut and how are they used

Nylon lock nuts are hex nuts that feature a nylon insert located in a tapered section at the back of the nut.

  • Nylon insert lock nuts generate a large amount of friction and heat during installation and are susceptible to galling. Milk of Magnesia is the only US Military approved method for preventing galling.
  • When fastening soft or brittle materials it is suggested to use a jam and hex nut assembly to keep the materials in place without damaging them from pressure.
  • During installation the nylon insert conforms to the threads and locks the nut in place providing a distinct advantage over a lock washer.
  • The nylon insert provides a locking mechanism that resists vibrations and torque that could cause loosening and a failure of the fastened part.
  • Nylon insert lock nuts are generally a one time use fastener since the thread of the bolt or screw deforms the nylon. Although lock nuts can be reused it is recommended to use new nuts in critical fastener connections.

2d wing nuts

What is a Wing Nut

Wing nuts are an internally threaded fastener featuring two protrusions on the head of the nut.

What are wing nuts used for

  • Wing nuts are most commonly used in applications where components are not permanent and need to be removed or adjusted
  • Wing nuts can be tightened or loosened by hand and require no tools.
  • Being designed for easy installation and removal, it is not recommended to use wing nuts in critical areas susceptible to heavy vibrations.
